Spanish Teacher in London

teacher2

Teacher name: Elena

During the present year I have worked as a supply teacher in a French-Spanish school in Tenerife (Spain) with students aged 5-18 and as a supply teacher of Spanish in a language academy for adults. I have also participated in a research project in Applied Linguistics for the last four years while completing my PhD.

I have finished a six-month postgraduate course in teaching Spanish as a foreign language via the UNED (National Distance Education University, Spain), which has helped me to deepen my theoretical and practical knowledge of the process of teaching and learning a foreign language.

I have vast experience as a private teacher. Since 2008 I have tutored students of different ages and levels, teaching them Spanish, English or through homework help.

One of my greatest strengths is organisation and attention to detail. I am passionate about teaching and languages in general, and I firmly believe that there is always something that would motivate students to learn a new language and, precisely, guiding them through the process so they can, at least, attempt to discover how a language might help them in the future, is one of my main goals.

Regarding my teaching style, I think I try to be flexible and adapt myself to the students’ age, level, needs and preferences. Lessons are then prepared depending on these necessities. I like to combine different types of exercises and skills, and to use authentic materials which provide language in real contexts, including music, films, books, magazines and games. I believe that language cannot be acquired in isolation. It must definitely be taught as part of a culture, so intercultural skills must be emphasized and acquired through the lessons as well.

In my opinion, a great teacher should be not only an expert in the area he teaches, but someone who knows how to transmit his knowledge and make it relevant to the students. Passion and patience are therefore key attributes for a good teacher. I believe that the students’ motivation is, to a large extent, due to the teacher’s abilities and attitudes in the classroom. Moreover, the type of activities, materials and lessons must be tailored to the needs, ages and levels of the students, combining different kinds of knowledge, such as lexical, grammatical, pragmatic or cultural. Thus, language should be taught as part of a culture, providing suitable contexts for the students to acquire it and understand it better.

Born to teach I have been teaching German and Italian since 1989. I always feel myself very satisfied whilst teaching. I have a huge ammount of experience into teaching to young students as well as adults and they always achieved excellent results. A normal lesson always covers grammar, listening comprehension, reading comprehension, speaking and, last but not, least translating. Translating is a substantial part of my teaching method. When students translate they make mistakes and through them we study deeper the grammar and the language style.

First of all a natural inclination to teaching. Then, passion and satisfaction when students achieve their goals

Name of the teacher: Silvia

I worked for several years in a private Language school in the North of Italy, where I taught English, Spanish, French and Italian for foreign learners. In the school I took care of searching and arranging for the materials for the classes and teaching, keeping up-to-date on teaching methods and materials in order to build a complete and rich path of study for the students. I was also responsible to participate to the selection of other teachers for the school given my competency and knowledge of English, French and Spanish (I also spent several months in France and on the island of St. Martin where French is the second official language). I also prepared and corrected the exams the students regularly take. I’m always attentive and interested in improving the quality of the lessons offered, integrating them with notions of culture, history and history of the language related to the language studied, all of this cooperating with the language coordinator. I always engage and captivate my students’ attention also through virtual learning in many different ways and with different means such as cinema, theatre, arts and music, reminding them that the beauty and richness of a culture can better be understood through the complete understanding of its inner language system.

I served as Language Teaching Assistant in the Department of Italian Studies at Wellesley College (Wellesley, Massachusetts USA), through the Overseas scholarship I received from the University of Bologna during my graduate studies, for an academic year, from August 2012 until May 2013. My duties included:

• acting as a language resource for those Wellesley students who had opted to live on the College’s Italian Cluster;
• offering drop-in office hours for students needing extra help with their Italian;
• assisting advanced students with their writing skills;
• organizing weekly Italian Tables for interested students;
• assisting students about to go to Bologna on the College’s Eastern College Consortium program;
• co-organizing two series of Italian films;
• organizing and preparing other Italian-based social events, such as dinners;
• acting as occasional supplemental teacher for language courses.

These teaching experiences have shown me how rewarding is to pass your skills and knowledge on to someone, so doing inspiring the posterity. I wish to transmit to my students the belief that a foreign language is not an exclusive space, on the contrary, as long as there is interest, enthusiasm and commitment, anyone can gain access to it and benefit from it in many ways.

I am an enthusiastic communicator with a pleasant personality, I have excellent team working skills, genuine interest in people education; I am highly organized with good time organization and project management skills. I am able to relate in heterogeneous and multicultural contexts. I speak and write fluently English, French and Spanish, and I also read and speak a little of Catalan and German. Thanks to my Master of Arts at the University of Bologna, in Language, Society and Communication I have developed and reached a highly practical competency and deep theoretical knowledge in two languages of international communication, English and Spanish (level C2).

French private tutor in East London

Name of the teacher: Aude

Language: French

I am currently working in a school as a foreign language assistant since September. I have experience from working as a foreign language assistant for one year in Liverpool. I was also a private tutor in my home country, France. My job as FLA was /is to prepare GCSE and A-level students for their exams. Using an example of their exam board, adapting it to each students’ strengths and weaknesses, I first go over what they already know, consolidate their knowledge and from there, move on to the more difficult aspects of language. In each session I incorporate an element of French culture, so that they don’t simply learn a language but the culture as well. In my year as a private tutor (for the French tutoring agency Acadomia), I have had a few adult learners and I have applied this process to them as well, with a few tweaks here and there. The main reason is because they decide to learn French for more specific reasons and I always adapt my lessons according to their need rather than an exam board’s. If they need to learn business French, I make sure to change my lessons so that even examples of sentences may be used by my students. I also research what I need so that I can give them as much information about the field they are targeting. As for homework, I always try to include fun ones, using audio files and videos to work on oral comprehension and production. It is not enough to know the grammar, it is essential to be able to understand the spoken language, especially since French is tricky in terms of speaking/spelling.

What makes me a great teacher is that I care about my students. I am interested in why they want to learn, how they feel about their learning and make sure to know if we are moving too fast for them. I am patient, Rome wasn’t built in a day, and I am creative, both in my lessons and in my approach to any problems. I always find different was of explaining a point. I am adaptable, and I often put myself in their shoes to understand what gives them a hard time. I am friendly, approachable and I never judge. I also know when to push a student and when to stop, when to congratulate them and encourage them.

HI, I have my own students, own website, I work for Cactus Languages as a language trainer (for a class) and I also work for different agencies here in London. My lessons are tailor-made one-to-one, I try to adapt to my students. I am passionate about teaching, my mother used to be a French teacher too. I teach adults and children.

I have a truly multicultural and multilingual background, having a French mother and a Dutch father, and having been educated at French schools while growing up in the USA and in Holland. I have a genuine passion for France and all things French, and studied French language and then translation & interpreting (Fr-En-Fr) at university. French and Dutch are my native tongues. After a rewarding career in project management and translation, I now feel as though I have found my true calling, teaching the languages and cultures that I love. At the moment I have my own students (private tutoring one-to-one), I work for Cactus Languages as a Language Trainer and I have several agencies that hire me to work as a tutor. I also have my own website of which I am very proud of! While I believe that I do naturally transmit my enthusiasm for the French and Dutch languages to students, more importantly, I place a real premium on understanding and then providing the right environment for each student to thrive in. Ultimately, the best way I can share my love of learning languages and cultures is through giving each student a genuine feeling that they are succeeding. My understanding of learning is that confidence is key, and that once that a true level of confidence has been established on a solid grounding of knowledge, students can progress in ways that can affect every area of their live. This is why I enjoy one-to-one tuition so much. I am naturally a friendly people-orientated person and to-date, believe that I have established a good bond with each of my students, predominantly through taking an interest in them and supporting their needs. I particularly enjoy being around youngsters and of course seeing them develop is a true joy.

Parli italiano? Qualified Italian teacher – One to one lessons

My name is Karen M. I am an Italian citizen (Italian is my native language) with solid and extensive experience in teaching Italian overseas.

In 2004 I graduated from the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart (Milan, Italy) with a Bachelor of Arts, Honours in Media/Film Studies. In 2005 I moved to Melbourne (Australia) where I became a fully qualified teacher after completing my Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Secondary Teaching), and taught Italian here for 9 years.

I recently decided to move to London to be closer to my family.

While overseas, I taught Italian at all levels (beginners to advanced) to students of all ages and abilities in both language centres and high schools.

When teaching, I employ a variety of teaching methods such as the communicative method; as well as audio-lingual, direct and sociocognitive approaches among others.

This means, for instance, that my learning activities include a varied range of tasks that mimic the use of the Italian language in real life situations. Grammar rules are never the focus of a lesson. Grammar is taught inductively; rules are generalised from practice, experience and examples.

The acquisition of the ability to speak in another language has mainly communicative purposes. In that sense, it goes beyond grammar, including body language, cultural assumptions and it is context specific. Learning a language is a social activity and it should be fun! Learning Italian also means developing an understanding of Italian culture, customs and traditions.

In my lessons I like to create a friendly and enthusiastic environment were everyone feels comfortable in participating and is engaged in the activities.

When teaching, I like to incorporated the use of ICT both in class and to support individual extended learning outside classroom. I aim to create lessons that focus on the development of speaking, listening, reading and writing skills using all sort of authentic material (newspaper, magazines etc.), audio-visual texts (tv commercials, songs, films etc.) and recordings, just to mention some.

I am very passionate about Italian language and culture and I am writing to you in the hope to be able to continue teaching Italian also in London.

Thank you,
Karen
