I worked for several years in a private Language school in the North of Italy, where I taught English, Spanish, French and Italian for foreign learners. In the school I took care of searching and arranging for the materials for the classes and teaching, keeping up-to-date on teaching methods and materials in order to build a complete and rich path of study for the students. I was also responsible to participate to the selection of other teachers for the school given my competency and knowledge of English, French and Spanish (I also spent several months in France and on the island of St. Martin where French is the second official language). I served as Language Teaching Assistant in the Department of Italian Studies at Wellesley College (Wellesley, Massachusetts USA), through the Overseas scholarship I received from the University of Bologna during my graduate studies, for an academic year, from August 2012 until May 2013. My duties included:

• acting as a language resource for those Wellesley students who had opted to live on the College’s Italian Cluster;
• offering drop-in office hours for students needing extra help with their Italian;
• assisting advanced students with their writing skills;
• organizing weekly Italian Tables for interested students;
• assisting students about to go to Bologna on the College’s Eastern College Consortium program;
• co-organizing two series of Italian films;
• organizing and preparing other Italian-based social events, such as dinners;
• acting as occasional supplemental teacher for language courses.

These teaching experiences have shown me how rewarding is to pass your skills and knowledge on to someone, so doing inspiring the posterity. I wish to transmit to my students the belief that a foreign language is not an exclusive space, on the contrary, as long as there is interest, enthusiasm and commitment, anyone can gain access to it and benefit from it in many ways.

I am currently working in a school as a foreign language assistant since September. I have experience from working as a foreign language assistant for one year in Liverpool. I was also a private tutor in my home country, France. My job as FLA was /is to prepare GCSE and A-level students for their exams. Using an example of their exam board, adapting it to each students’ strengths and weaknesses, I first go over what they already know, consolidate their knowledge and from there, move on to the more difficult aspects of language. In each session I incorporate an element of French culture, so that they don’t simply learn a language but the culture as well. In my year as a private tutor (for the French tutoring agency Acadomia), I have had a few adult learners and I have applied this process to them as well, with a few tweaks here and there. The main reason is because they decide to learn French for more specific reasons and I always adapt my lessons according to their need rather than an exam board’s. If they need to learn business French, I make sure to change my lessons so that even examples of sentences may be used by my students. I also research what I need so that I can give them as much information about the field they are targeting. As for homework, I always try to include fun ones, using audio files and videos to work on oral comprehension and production. It is not enough to know the grammar, it is essential to be able to understand the spoken language, especially since French is tricky in terms of speaking/spelling.

What makes me a great teacher is that I care about my students. I am interested in why they want to learn, how they feel about their learning and make sure to know if we are moving too fast for them. I am patient, Rome wasn’t built in a day, and I am creative, both in my lessons and in my approach to any problems. I always find different was of explaining a point. I am adaptable, and I often put myself in their shoes to understand what gives them a hard time. I am friendly, approachable and I never judge. I also know when to push a student and when to stop, when to congratulate them and encourage them.

My name is Karen M. I am an Italian citizen (Italian is my native language) with solid and extensive experience in teaching Italian overseas.

In 2004 I graduated from the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart (Milan, Italy) with a Bachelor of Arts, Honours in Media/Film Studies. In 2005 I moved to Melbourne (Australia) where I became a fully qualified teacher after completing my Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Secondary Teaching), and taught Italian here for 9 years.

I recently decided to move to London to be closer to my family.

While overseas, I taught Italian at all levels (beginners to advanced) to students of all ages and abilities in both language centres and high schools.

When teaching, I employ a variety of teaching methods such as the communicative method; as well as audio-lingual, direct and sociocognitive approaches among others.

This means, for instance, that my learning activities include a varied range of tasks that mimic the use of the Italian language in real life situations. Grammar rules are never the focus of a lesson. Grammar is taught inductively; rules are generalised from practice, experience and examples.

The acquisition of the ability to speak in another language has mainly communicative purposes. In that sense, it goes beyond grammar, including body language, cultural assumptions and it is context specific. Learning a language is a social activity and it should be fun! Learning Italian also means developing an understanding of Italian culture, customs and traditions.

In my lessons I like to create a friendly and enthusiastic environment were everyone feels comfortable in participating and is engaged in the activities.

When teaching, I like to incorporated the use of ICT both in class and to support individual extended learning outside classroom. I aim to create lessons that focus on the development of speaking, listening, reading and writing skills using all sort of authentic material (newspaper, magazines etc.), audio-visual texts (tv commercials, songs, films etc.) and recordings, just to mention some.

As well as a CELTA, I have a number of years experience teaching general, exam (FCE, CAE, BEC, IELTS) and business English, to a wide variety of clients, both within the UK and abroad. Speak Like A Native – Learn The Lingo In Foreign Climes

This time of year sees many changes for younger people – many of whom might well be leaving home for the first time in order to work or study. Some might be lucky enough to have the chance to do so abroad and whilst it can be a nervous time, it’s also one of great excitement. One of the biggest challenges for anyone making this transition is learning enough of the language to get by as they settle in and get used to their new surroundings.

Before you go

Try and get at least the basics before you go. Even something as simple as learning the alphabet of that particular language and how to count to ten. These basics – along with some simple greetings and salutations can make the transition seem that bit easier. Many Smartphones and suchlike have special apps that can help you learn basic phrases – some even with pronunciations too, so it can make speaking/repeating the phrases easier. It can be worth downloading and trying some of these to find the one that suits you best.

While you’re there

Get out and about as much as you can – take day trips, visit local markets (and yes, even the nightlife) to try and complement your learning and any language classes you’re taking as part of your move. The more you immerse yourself in local culture, the more you can pick nuances of language up and get used to it all. Be aware and always be safe though, don’t put yourself in situations that you may find it tricky to get out of, especially if you’re lacking in confidence with speaking the language.
Use social media to help you! Things like Facebook and Twitter might not seem like they would be of much use, but they can be a real boon to help you look at how words are written in foreign languages and how syntax is formed. Join local groups and try to interact with local people to practice.

The practicalities of moving

Of course, learning the language isn’t the only factor you’ll need to consider when you move but it will help you with all the other choices and decisions you need to make before and in the initial stages of your arrival and as you settle down. It’s important to be prepared on every level and to know what to do if something goes wrong too. Knowing how to deal with officials and being able to communicate with them effectively can also make things a little easier. Though, in truth, if you are really stuck – you can very often find someone who speaks your native language to help you out.
